Busted on Friday…Livin’ a REAL life and training too
Posted on August 8, 2010
The very best fitness plans have to live up to the stress test that we all encounter – getting past Friday at 5 pm. So much of the discipline and scheduling that we rely upon to stay on track gets lost on the weekends…It definitely happens to me, especially in the summer. Hmmm…summer months….less rigorous training…maybe not so good for marathons in October? I promised myself this weekend would be different. (familiar to anyone….anyone…?) Well, the scheduled 8 mile run turned into a 4 mile slow pace run (and that’s a being generous because I don’t want to hurt my own feelings!). This was followed by dinner with my fave four, complete with roasted red pepper bisque appetizer and lobster ravioli in vodka sauce. (OFI!!! I shall ask STAR BLOGGER LISA to turn these into heart healthy calorie miser recipes!)
By the way, Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough,Australia) is a surprisingly terrif white…chilled…perfect with my meal – doesn’t bust the budget either.
Add in the strolling Italian guitar playing tenor, mention that dinner is served on the wrap around front porch and, really…can you blame me?
Saturday morning, back to reality. The 8 mile plan I ditched came to life before 7 am. It HAD to. I needed to log the miles, run the hills, and burn off the fork fulls of dessert I shared with my daughter the night before. Posted a decent time, felt strong on the hills…loved my new music downloads…got the day started just right with plenty of time to empty a room and prepare it for painting, mow the lawn and otherwise tend to long neglected domestic duties.
But OH – what hath Sunday wrought? I could barely climb over the cat when the sun poured in my windows on Sunday morning. Was this alien stiffness from a ridiculous fitness session on Wednesday featuring Tabeta training with pushups and twisting crunches (GREAT topic for tomorrow!) or the hills I crushed Saturday?
NO EXCUSES!
Before my sore abs and quads could influence me, I was laced up and out the door for 6 mile loop with one long elevated section. SLOW first 1.5 miles to loosen up, SLOW up the .75 mile hill…but I did not stop, not for one second…and then, I was rewarded by a 3 mile flat run in an unfamiliar neighborhood. I kept a steady stream of positive self talk going through my music stylings and before long my mood improved, my quads loosened and my pace quickened and I made it home sweaty, tired and hot! But proud. Very proud.
So, the lesson? Moderation MUST be one of the lessons for this weekend (dinner was incredible, but I had them box half to take home with me). That, and stick to the plan as much as you can, but when you have a fantastic alternative, take advantage of it. But then – GET BACK on TRACK before you lose momentum. And – when you are sore and stiff and questioning whether you should get out and move – GO….walk alone or with a friend or your dog, run, bike, push a stroller – but move!
And – positive self talk the whole way!

Hey Diva! How are you? Miss you guys.. sounds good.. I’ll be there at 6:00pm.. I miss those inspiring words .. to keep me motivated. 🙂
Way to go! MODERATION is the key . . . we should never lose focus of what is truly important in our lives and spending time with your daughter, enjoying a wonderful meal, wine and dessert is what is important.
You got back on track and should be proud of that. Remember to listen to your body and keep those positive tapes playing in your head!
