I knew immediately I had to help. Before I knew it, I was off getting supplies and researching patterns online. I watched one YouTube video and had my first prototype sewn within 15 minutes.

I have always been savvy with a sewing machine. I grew up watching my mother fix hemlines and buttons on her Singer. I learned the basics in a middle school sewing class and over the years, I’ve worked to develop my sewing skills with handmade Halloween costumes. But to crank out a large volume of masks in short amount of time, I knew I couldn’t do it alone.

My immediate family and I have been quarantining together and, since I started sewing at a young age, I figured my niece and nephews would pick it up quickly as well. And they sure did!

Quinton (13) prepped the straps and fabric for sewing. Devin (9) measured and marked the fabric for the additional protection slit. Ava (13) prepared the mask pleats and Alex (11) sewed the masks together. We all worked together seamlessly and made over 40 masks in just two sewing sessions!

Our masks have been donated to healthcare workers on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic. We send each mask with a handwritten note of thanks and gratitude and hope our homemade masks not only provide protection, but also comfort during this time.

My name is Monique and I have been working with my family to make homemade masks for those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.
