Where Health Matters<\/em> grant for their Supportive Pregnancy Care Program. This project aims to decrease risk factors for premature births and increase utilization of group prenatal care, addressing the infant and maternal health focus area.<\/p>\nFor more than eighty years, the March of Dimes has developed a credible reputation for their efforts to provide the best health outcomes possible for all mothers and babies. Their Supportive Pregnancy Care Program was developed in response to the crisis facing mothers and babies in the Worcester Hispanic\/Latino communities. With the highest IMR (infant mortality rate) in the state of Massachusetts, Worcester\u2019s IMR is also two times higher than the state\u2019s Hispanic IMR. Over the last decade, 75% of these infant deaths were neonatal, and related to extreme prematurity.<\/p>\n
Health New England\u2019s grant funding will enable March of Dimes to host a location focused on providing prenatal care groups for low-income women, who have fewer social supports, particularly Latina mothers and those diagnosed with gestational diabetes. This group care model serves to encourage consistent health monitoring and create a support network for this at-risk demographic. Additionally, the Supportive Pregnancy Program promotes self-efficiency and health literacy. Cumulatively, these efforts work toward the ultimate goal of reducing the outcome of premature birth and low birthweight infants.<\/p>\n
The Supportive Pregnancy Care Program will work in tandem with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UMass Memorial, as well as their NICU Family Support Program. UMass Memorial provides prenatal care for approximately 1,700 deliveries per year, and to patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. This partnership will help ensure the long-term success of the program, as UMass will provide the space and health care providers to facilitate group care. March of Dimes will provide UMass technical assistance to gather and input data to enable the reporting of metrics and aggregated data reports.<\/p>\n
