The new cards will use a unique, randomly-assigned number\u00a0called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI), to replace the Social Security-based Health\u00a0Insurance Claim Number (HICN) currently used on the Medicare card. CMS will begin mailing\u00a0new cards in April 2018 and will meet the Congressional deadline for replacing all Medicare\u00a0cards by April 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 The cards will automatically be mailed\u00a0to all 58 million current Medicare\u00a0beneficiaries. You don\u2019t need to do\u00a0anything special to receive one.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 Your benefits won\u2019t change with the new\u00a0MBI number.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 Beware of anyone calling about the new\u00a0card.
