In addition, about one in five Americans between the ages of 16 and 59 have reported using at least one illegal drug.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Alcohol and Drug Abuse?<\/strong><br \/>\nAlcohol and drug abuse is a pattern of drinking or drug use that results in one or more of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Failure to meet major work, school, or home responsibilities<\/li>\n<li>Drinking or drug use while driving a car or using machinery<\/li>\n<li>Repeated alcohol or drug-related problems<\/li>\n<li>Ongoing relationship problems as a result of alcohol or drug use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is Alcoholism and Drug Addiction?<\/strong><br \/>\nAlcoholism and drug addiction include four symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Craving: a strong need, or compulsion to drink or use drugs<\/li>\n<li>Loss of Control: the inability to limit your drinking or drug use<\/li>\n<li>Physical Dependence: withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, and anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Tolerance: the need to use greater amounts of alcohol or drugs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What to Do if You Need and Want Help<\/strong><br \/>\nAdmitting you have an alcohol or drug problem and accepting help for it is hard \u2013 very hard. The<br \/>\nsooner you get help, the better your chances of recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Your provider will talk with you about your drinking and drug use. Based on your responses, he or she will recommend the right kind of care for you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to Do to Get Well<\/strong><br \/>\nTreatment may include one or more of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Detoxification<\/li>\n<li>Taking doctor-prescribed medication<\/li>\n<li>Individual and\/or group counseling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are certain things you can do to make refraining from drug or alcohol use easier:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attend self-help or support groups<\/li>\n<li>Engage in hobbies<\/li>\n<li>Begin to exercise<\/li>\n<li>Tell trusted people \u2013 family, friends what you are doing<\/li>\n<li>Avoid the people with whom you used to drink or use drugs<\/li>\n<li>Avoid situations that may be stressful or make you feel anxious<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is Alcoholics Anonymous?<\/strong><br \/>\nAlmost all alcohol and drug treatment programs involve Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings. AA describes itself as a \u201cworldwide fellowship of men and women who help each other to stay sober.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Narcotics Anonymous?<\/strong><br \/>\nNarcotics Anonymous (NA) is an effective mutual help program for drug addicts.
