These disorders include autism, pervasive developmental disorder, and Asperger\u2019s syndrome. The causes of autism spectrum disorders are unknown.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong><br \/>\nThere is no medical test that can detect and diagnose autism. The diagnosis is made through a clinical evaluation and observation of the child\u2019s communication and behavior, along with a comprehensive review of developmental, psychological, and social factors. A diagnosis can usually be made by the age of 3; however, in some children the symptoms may indicate a need for intervention as early as age 2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indicators of Possible Autism Spectrum Disorders<\/strong><br \/>\nThe child:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does not babble, point, or make meaningful \t\t\t\tgestures by 1 year of age<\/li>\n<li>Does not speak one word by 16 months of age<\/li>\n<li>Does not respond to name by 1 year of age<\/li>\n<li>Lacks language or social skills<\/li>\n<li>Does not smile<\/li>\n<li>Does not seem to know how to play with toys<\/li>\n<li>Excessively lines up toys or other objects<\/li>\n<li>At times seems to be hearing-impaired<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have concerns about these or any other behaviors, please discuss them with your child\u2019s pediatrician.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Treatment<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are no cures for autism spectrum disorders, but early diagnosis and early intervention are key in achieving greater <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-77\" title=\"autistic boy_opt\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/03c4283.netsolhost.com\/member\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/autistic-boy_opt-300x198.jpg?resize=300%2C198\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/>positive results. Talk with your doctor about treatment options that will work best for you and your child. Although there is no single treatment, parental involvement has emerged as a major factor in treatment success. Parents work with teachers and therapists to identify the behaviors to be changed and the skills to be taught. After your child is diagnosed, it may be helpful to keep a notebook or log of all the information you gather.<\/p>\n<p>Medication may be prescribed to help reduce possible associated symptoms such as hyperactivity, anxiety, agitation, aggression, or self-injurious behaviors. Early intervention programs are available for children under the age of 3.
