{"id":53,"date":"2010-06-08T10:49:45","date_gmt":"2010-06-08T14:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hnetalk.com\/Member\/?p=53"},"modified":"2010-06-08T10:49:45","modified_gmt":"2010-06-08T14:49:45","slug":"sometimes-the-symptoms-of-depression-are-overlooked-what-you-can-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hnetalk.com\/member\/sometimes-the-symptoms-of-depression-are-overlooked-what-you-can-do\/","title":{"rendered":"Sometimes the Symptoms of Depression are Overlooked: What you can do"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cDoctors fail to recognize severe depression in half the patients who suffer it.\u201d<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-80\" title=\"depressed_man_opt\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/03c4283.netsolhost.com\/member\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/depressed_man_opt.jpeg?resize=146%2C185\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"185\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>So began an article published in the Science section of the New York Times on December 18, 1989.<\/p>\n<p>According to a July, 2009 article in Time Magazine, little has changed over the last twenty years. \u201cIn a review of 41 previous studies involving more than 50,000 patients in developed nations around the world, the authors found that general practitioners make frequent mistakes, missing true cases of depression about half the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What can you do to ensure that if you are suffering from depression, you are diagnosed and treated correctly?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recognize the Symptoms Yourself<\/strong><br \/>\nIt\u2019s important for you to recognize the emotional, psychological, and physical symptoms of depression.<br \/>\nPhysical symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Constant fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss or gain<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness, nausea, lightheaded<\/li>\n<li>Problems sleeping or changes in sleep patterns<\/li>\n<li>Digestive problems<\/li>\n<li>Aches and pains, such as chest pain, headaches, muscle\u00a0 aches, and joint and back pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Emotional and Psychological Symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A general feeling of emptiness,\u00a0 emotional numbness, sadness<\/li>\n<li>Unprovoked anger or irritability<\/li>\n<li>Unfounded feelings of guilt or uselessness<\/li>\n<li>Low self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Suicidal thoughts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Make Sure Your Doctor Takes Your Symptoms Seriously<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen you see a doctor, it\u2019s important to be your own best advocate.<br \/>\nThe symptoms of depression can be confused with symptoms of other ailments or dismissed as unimportant. If you believe your doctor downplays or minimizes the symptoms you describe, be proactive. Explain to the doctor how your symptoms are affecting your life. If necessary, get a second opinion. And don\u2019t hide your symptoms from your PCP. He or she can\u2019t help you if you aren\u2019t honest and forthcoming about how you feel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Take Action to Get Treatment for Depression<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are many treatments available for depression, ranging from counseling and therapy to a wide variety of anti-depressant medications. Your PCP can refer you to a behavioral health provider if necessary. Your PCP may prescribe medication for you. There are also holistic and alternative treatments available, such as changes in diet, herbal remedies, and a large body of stress management techniques.
