As new technology is made available,\u00a0Medicare decides which medical services \u00a0and products will be covered, subject to\u00a0Medicare laws and regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Medicare covers only those treatments that\u00a0are determined to be safe and effective,\u00a0medically necessary and not experimental. As\u00a0a Medicare health plan, Health New England\u00a0Medicare Advantage must cover all services\u00a0covered by Original Medicare\u2019s coverage rules.\u00a0Our Medicare Advantage plan follows National\u00a0Coverage Determinations (NCDs), the Medicare\u00a0Benefit Policy Manual and Local Coverage\u00a0Determinations (LCDs) to make coverage\u00a0determinations for our Medicare Advantage\u00a0members. If you have questions about whether\u00a0a particular test, device or treatment is covered,\u00a0call Member Services.<\/p>\n<p>Medicare may cover your medical services\u00a0when you are in an approved \u201cclinical research\u00a0study.\u201d A clinical research study is a way that\u00a0doctors and scientists test new types of medical\u00a0care, like how well a new cancer drug works.\u00a0They test new medical care procedures or drugs\u00a0by asking or volunteers to help with the study.\u00a0This kind of study is one of the final stages of\u00a0the research process that helps doctors and\u00a0scientists see if a new\u00a0approach works and\u00a0it is safe. Not all clinical research studies are\u00a0open to members of our plan. Medicare first\u00a0needs to approve the research study.
