So what\u2019s the difference between routine and non-routine preventive services?<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/healthnewengland.org\/preventive-care-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Routine preventive services<\/a>,<\/strong> such as immunizations, laboratory tests, screenings and other services listed below, are intended to prevent illness or detect problems before you notice any symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mammogram<\/li>\n<li>Annual physical exam<\/li>\n<li>Annual vision exam<\/li>\n<li>Screening colonoscopy<\/li>\n<li>Routine prenatal care<\/li>\n<li>Certain laboratory services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During a preventive visit, your doctor may want to conduct additional services based on findings or recommendations. If the primary purpose of the visit was to receive preventive services and the services are billed together with an office visit, no cost sharing will apply.<\/p>\n<p>However, copays, deductible or coinsurance may apply if a preventive service is billed separately from an office visit. Here are some proactive steps you can take to better understand how you will be billed for your doctor visit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask your doctor why a test or service is ordered<\/li>\n<li>Call HNE, to determine if the service you\u2019re planning to have is preventive<\/li>\n<li>Refer to your benefit plan for detailed information on your coverage<\/li>\n<li>If you received a bill and are unsure why, call HNE for assistance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Non-routine preventive services <\/strong>are those services that are intended to treat or diagnose a problem that you may be experiencing such as monitoring an existing condition or abnormal test results. For example, a second mammogram because a lump was detected. This type of service would be considered a non-routine preventive service.
