\"stop<\/a>Did you know that someone can steal your medical identity? They can use it to get health care, drugs, and other goods. When this happens your medical record will have information that is about someone else. Doctors may get confused when they care for you. There can also be problems when your doctor bills the health insurance company. It is often a long and hard process to find and clean out all of the errors in a polluted medical record.<\/p>\n

If this happens, you may be billed for goods and services you never got. Someone else may have gotten them, or a dishonest provider may have used your identity to bill for care that no one got. Medical identity theft is more common than you may think. One Massachusetts psychiatrist stole the identities of several people. He falsely diagnosed them with drug addiction and depression. Then he billed their insurance for mental health care that he had not given. These people had never even met him.<\/p>\n

HNE carefully protects all of our member data. We use safeguards in storage, access,
\nand transportation of information. Data on electronic devices is always encrypted. If it were stolen, no one would be able to read it.<\/p>\n

You need to protect your identity too. Thieves will try to get your insurance ID number, social security number, and other personal data. They may steal your ID card. They may pretend to be a health or insurance worker, and call to ask for your information. Do not give it to anyone you do not totally trust.<\/p>\n

If anyone asks for it in person, on the phone, or online, make sure they are who they say they are. Be very careful not to lose your ID card or any papers or devices that have your information.<\/p>\n
