\"HNE_DrLaurie_728X90\"I remember as a kid absolutely loving the Charlie Brown Halloween special where he waits for the Great Pumpkin! It was somewhat of a holiday tradition that I have passed on to my own children. To my family, pumpkins are the quintessential symbol of Halloween!<\/p>\n

Whether you carve your pumpkins to make a jack-o-lantern, paint them, adorn them with ribbons, stickers or draw on them with markers, they represent the spirit of the season!<\/p>\n

Remember pumpkin safety!\u00a0\u00a0 Every year I see folks in the ER with hand and finger\u00a0injuries\u00a0after a pumpkin cutting mishap.\u00a0 So here are a few safety tips.<\/p>\n

1. Set up in a clean, well lit area.\u00a0\u00a0Keep everything dry.\u00a0 Pumpkins can get slippery!<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Find the right tools. The tools in pumpkin carving kits are designed to make carving easier.\u00a0 Kitchen knives can get stuck in the thick pulp and take more force to remove, which is when injuries can occur. Make small controlled cuts and cut away from your other hand.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Leave the top on until you finish cutting.\u00a0 That way you will not be tempted to put your hand inside and you can use the\u00a0stem to hold onto while you cut.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Do not let children 14 and under carve.<\/p>\n
