You\u2019ve cleared out the closets, the basement, and the garage. Did you remember to clean out the medicine cabinet? It\u2019s not too late. The EPA has established guidelines regarding proper medicine disposal.<br \/>\nThe first thing you might do is call your local city or town offices to ask if there is a drug take-back program in your community. If there is no program or a special collection day, please do not flush the expired or unwanted medication down the toilet or drain. Here\u2019s what to do instead:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li>Take your prescription drugs out of their original containers.<\/li>\n<li>Mix the medication with an undesirable substance like cat litter or used coffee grounds.<\/li>\n<li>Put the mixture into a disposable sealable bag or container with a lid.<\/li>\n<li>Remove any personal information such as Rx numbers and names from empty medication containers.<\/li>\n<li>Place the sealed container with the drug mixture and the empty drug containers in the trash.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you take the time to properly dispose of medication, you\u2019ll obtain these benefits:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Prevent poisoning of children and pets<\/li>\n<li>Deter the misuse of drugs by others in the household and prevent them from accidentally taking the wrong medication<\/li>\n<li>Keep medicines from entering streams and rivers, avoiding contamination of sources of drinking water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>These are great reasons to make cleaning your medicine cabinet part of your routine cleaning regimen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s that time of year when you strive for a fresh start in your home environment.
