If this pressure rises and stays high over time, it is called hypertension. <i>If it is not controlled, high blood pressure can cause serious health issues:<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Stroke<\/li>\n<li>Heart attack<\/li>\n<li>Kidney problems<\/li>\n<li>Heart failure<\/li>\n<li>Eye problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Most people with high blood pressure feel healthy and don&#8217;t have symptoms. The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure checked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Do You Get Checked for High Blood Pressure?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Checking your blood pressure is simple. Your provider places a fabric cuff around your upper arm and pumps it full of air. Your provider then listens to your heartbeat while the air lets out of the cuff.<\/p>\n<p><b>Follow these steps to help your provider measure your blood pressure correctly:<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear a short-sleeved shirt or blouse.<\/li>\n<li>Empty your bladder.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t smoke, exercise, or drink caffeine for at least 30 minutes before\u00a0your appointment.<\/li>\n<li>Sit down and relax with your feet on the floor and your back supported for at least 5 minutes before your blood pressure is checked.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t talk while your blood pressure is being checked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What Do Your Blood Pressure Numbers Mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Blood pressure is measured by two numbers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>The first (or top) number\u2014<b>&#8220;systolic&#8221;<\/b>\u2014is the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats.<\/li>\n<li>The second (or bottom) number\u2014<b>&#8220;diastolic&#8221;<\/b>\u2014is the pressure in your blood vessels between heartbeats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>If your blood pressure is normal<\/b>, that&#8217;s great! You should have it rechecked every year or so to be sure it stays within the normal range.<\/p>\n<p><b>If your blood pressure is pre-high or high<\/b>, it should be rechecked to determine whether you have hypertension. Ask your provider the following questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>When should I have my blood pressure checked again?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Do I need treatment for high blood pressure?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Can You Do to Prevent or Control High Blood Pressure?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Quit smoking or chewing tobacco.<\/b><br \/>\nAsk your provider for help with quitting.<\/p>\n<p><b>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Achieve and maintain a healthy weight.<\/b><br \/>\nIf you are overweight, ask your provider for help with an eating and physical activity plan to lose weight.<\/p>\n<p><b>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Be physically active.<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;Physical activity&#8221; includes any activity that raises your heart rate, such as brisk walking, working in the house or yard, or playing sports.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do activity for 10 minutes or more at a time. Aim for at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of activity each week.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reduce salt (sodium) in your diet.<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Read food labels. Choose and prepare foods that are low in sodium or are sodium-free.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ask to see a registered dietitian if you need help with a plan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Limit alcohol.<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Men should have no more than two drinks per day.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Women should have no more than one drink per day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why Is High Blood Pressure Dangerous?
