The Trials and Tribulations of Being a New Parent
Posted on June 11, 2014
Instead of your alarm clock waking you at 6:00 a.m., you hear the sound of cooing immediately followed by a loud “wahhh” minutes before your alarm goes off. Those good old days of snoozing past your alarm have come to an end (for a while at least). Your baby does not understand the difference between weekday versus weekend, so those lost hours during the weekday aren’t always caught up on the weekends.
This is your new norm. Exhausted, overwhelmed and stressed.
A lot of new parents often downplay how hard it is adjusting to new life as a parent. Perhaps they feel if they express their woes they are not good at parenting or feel incompetent. But that is far from the truth.
When you become a parent your whole entire world changes. Now you have a little person depending on you for everything. They look to you for love, nourishment, security, trust, shelter and to care about their overall well-being. Every decision that you make has an impact on your child.
As if taking care of another human isn’t hard enough, you can’t neglect your other obligations – such as maintaining a home, keeping a healthy relationship with your spouse, managing deadlines at work, and staying in touch with friends and family; there is a lot on your plate so it’s no wonder you feel exhausted, overwhelmed and stressed.
Do not let all those external factors discourage you from enjoying the most amazing experience life could offer – being a parent to your own baby. Expect there will be times when the laundry builds up, that you will be late for a friend’s party or you might have to go to bed earlier to anticipate your early start. It is all worth it when you get to witness each milestone in your child’s development.
Give yourself a break from time to time to focus on your needs to help you keep your sanity. Whether it is reading after you put the baby down for a nap, grabbing a coffee with a friend on the weekend, going for a walk in your neighborhood or working on a hobby that you enjoy, it is important to give yourself time for you, too. Life is all about keeping a healthy balance, and the rest generally seems to fall into place.
