PUMPKINS, PUMPKINS, PUMPKINS!

I remember as a kid absolutely loving the Charlie Brown Halloween special where he waits for the Great Pumpkin! It was somewhat of a holiday tradition that I have passed on to my own children. To my family, pumpkins are the quintessential symbol of Halloween!
Whether you carve your pumpkins to make a jack-o-lantern, paint them, adorn them with ribbons, stickers or draw on them with markers, they represent the spirit of the season!
Remember pumpkin safety! Every year I see folks in the ER with hand and finger injuries after a pumpkin cutting mishap. So here are a few safety tips.
1. Set up in a clean, well lit area. Keep everything dry. Pumpkins can get slippery!
2. Find the right tools. The tools in pumpkin carving kits are designed to make carving easier. Kitchen knives can get stuck in the thick pulp and take more force to remove, which is when injuries can occur. Make small controlled cuts and cut away from your other hand.
3. Leave the top on until you finish cutting. That way you will not be tempted to put your hand inside and you can use the stem to hold onto while you cut.
4. Do not let children 14 and under carve.
