Holiday Survival Tips

Do you look forward to the holidays and then wonder why, with all the stress you find yourself in? It is not surprising that we experience a higher level of stress during the holiday season.
- Countless hours of shopping to find that perfect gift
- Cleaning and decorating the house
- Cooking, baking and preparing for family gatherings
- Demands on your schedule with holiday parties and social engagements
It is no wonder that we feel tired and stressed!
Following are five simple things you can do to ease the stress of the holidays and maintain your health at the same time!
Maximize Your Time – Increase your physical activity during work to make up for missed gym workouts. Try walking 10 minutes during your morning break, 10 minutes during your lunch break, and another 10 minutes during your afternoon break. Use the stairs instead of the elevator and park in the furthest spot in the parking garage. This will help you to maintain your physical activity without adding any extra demands on your time. And, movement will make you more alert and productive so things don’t slip through the cracks.
Make a List – Make a list of things you need to buy when you are shopping. Before you start to shop, take a 20-minute brisk walk around the mall and window shop. This will give you time to think about what to buy and where and may even prevent you from overspending!
Take Advantage of Some Downtime on the Weekends – Schedule some downtime for you to just relax without any demands from family and friends, housework, shopping, etc. Even if it just 30 minutes to curl up and read a good book, take a hot bath or watch TV.
Drink More Water – Drinking water will help you feel full and will help you to eat less of the goodies around the office and at home. Try drinking a glass of water before each meal to help you avoid the extra calories!
Plan Ahead – Before you go to a party, eat a salad or have a cup of soup. Prepare something to bring that you know you can eat and enjoy without adding all those extra calories, and take a small plate to the buffet table! This will help you avoid the stress of weight gain during the holiday season!
