{"id":2545,"date":"2016-06-23T14:57:58","date_gmt":"2016-06-23T14:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hnetalk.com\/provider\/?p=2545"},"modified":"2016-06-23T15:06:58","modified_gmt":"2016-06-23T15:06:58","slug":"hedis-help-antidepressant-medication-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hnetalk.com\/provider\/hedis-help-antidepressant-medication-management\/","title":{"rendered":"HEDIS Help: Antidepressant Medication Management"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Health New England is committed to improving the percentage of members who remain on antidepressant medications after being newly diagnosed and treated with depression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you know?<br \/>\n<\/strong>According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), major depression disorder is a chronic condition that requires patients to participate actively in and adhere to treatment plans for long periods, despite the fact that side effects or requirements of treatment may be burdensome.\u00a0APA guidelines recommend antidepressants as the initial treatment for mild to moderate depression.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nWhat is the HEDIS measure?<br \/>\n<\/strong>The percentage of members 18 years of age and older who were diagnosed with a new episode of major depression, treated with antidepressant medication, and who remained on an antidepressant medication treatment. Two rates are reported.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Effective Acute Phase Treatment. The percentage of newly diagnosed and treated members who remained on an antidepressant medication for at least 84 days (12 weeks).<\/li>\n<li>Effective Continuation Phase Treatment. The percentage of newly diagnosed and treated members who remained on an antidepressant medication for at least 180 days (6 months).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nCodes to Identify Major Depression<\/strong><br \/>\nUse accurate coding! Does the member have Major Depressive Disorder? If the member is started on medication for anxiety disorder or other stress reaction disorder proper coding will exclude the patient from the measure.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Description<\/th>\n<th>ICD-10-CM Codes<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Major Depressive Disorder<\/td>\n<td>F32.2-F32.4, F32.9 \u2013 F33.3, F33.41, F33.9<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Medication Management and Adherence Improvement Strategies Recommended by APA<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The physician should assess and acknowledge potential barriers to treatment adherence, including lack of motivation, side effects of treatment, logistical, economic or cultural barriers to treatment.<\/li>\n<li>The physician should collaborate with the patient (and family, if possible) to minimize the impact of these potential barriers.<\/li>\n<li>Patients should be given realistic expectations during the different phases of treatment, including the time course of symptom response and the importance of adherence for successful treatment.<\/li>\n<li>Misperceptions, fears and concerns about antidepressants should be addressed with the patient.<\/li>\n<li>Education should be provided about major depression, the risk of relapse and the early recognition of recurrent symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>Patients should be informed about the need to taper antidepressants rather than discontinuing them prematurely.<\/li>\n<li>Common side effects of antidepressants should be discussed with the patient. The physician should encourage the patient to identify side effects they would consider reasonable and those they would consider unbearable.<\/li>\n<li>Physicians should offer an explanation of when and how to take the medication, reminder systems, information about continuing the medication after symptoms of depression improve, strategies to incorporate medication into the daily routine, and minimizing the cost of antidepressant regimens to improve adherence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Health New England is committed to improving the percentage of members who remain on antidepressant medications after being newly diagnosed and treated with depression.
