Your Pet, Your Health and Old-Man Winter

Staying healthy in cold weather is as easy as one, two, three
Ahhhh, winter. The days are shorter, the temperature is colder and sometimes that makes us stay inside. Our pets still need to venture out into the chill, however. What is the best action plan to make sure our furry pals’ needs are met? Anne Brandberg, a nurse practitioner who sees Medicare Advantage members just like you on behalf of Matrix Medical Network, shares a three-step plan to keep you (and your pet) happy and healthy this winter.
1) Prepare for winter by getting a flu shot.
The flu and respiratory infections are common in winter. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu season commonly peaks in the United States between December and February. Get your flu shot if you have not already. Anne also adds, “Make sure you are current on the Tdap vaccine with the resurgence of whooping cough.”
2) Keep walkways safe.
When snow falls or melts, outdoor walkways become hazardous without proper attention. For ice, “Have sand or ice-melt by the door and available to scatter,” Anne says. Be sure to remove fallen snow or ask a neighbor to remove it for you. When entering your home, “Take off boots or shoes when it is wet or snowing outside so that water isn’t tracked in to make floors slippery,” Anne says.
3) Walk outside with your pet.
You’ve had your flu shot and made your walkways safe. You are ready to go! Dress warmly, put on your boots and get that leash on your furry pal. “If the weather cooperates and there is no ice or snow, take the dog or just yourself for a walk 3-4 times weekly for 30 minutes,” Anne recommends.
These three tips can make the long winter more tolerable and ensures you and your pet stay healthy and active. Don’t forget, your pet needs you!
