What’s Your Number? Understanding Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels as your heart pumps. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is when the force against the blood vessels is too high, making your heart work harder. Untreated high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke, heart failure and other complications.
Know Your Blood Pressure Numbers
Controlling your blood pressure and knowing your numbers are very important to your overall health. Talk with your doctor about your blood pressure, how often you should check it, and any lifestyle or medication changes needed to help manage it.
Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers (see chart above). As an example, a blood pressure reading is usually stated as “110 over 75” or 110/75. Systolic pressure (upper number) is the measurement of the force as your heart beats. Diastolic pressure (lower number) is the measurement of force as your heart relaxes.
Simple Steps to Stay Healthy
Stay heart healthy and lower your risk for developing heart disease by following some simple steps:
» Eat healthy, low-sodium foods and maintain a healthy weight
» Exercise regularly and manage stress
» Control blood pressure and cholesterol
» Quit smoking, if you smoke, and limit alcohol consumption
