Posted on May 13, 2019
Do you ever feel your temper rise in a traffic jam or your heart race during a disagreement? We all get angry or frustrated at times—which is a normal, often healthy reaction. If you find yourself feeling this way often, it may be time to assess your anger meter. Too much anger and stress can be bad for you. It can harm everything from your relationships to your health and happiness.
Temper that Tantrum
Managing anger and stress has plenty of benefits. Here are a few strategies experts suggest, including many you can use in the heat of the moment:
- Avoid people or situations that trigger anger or stress as much as you can.
- Change your reaction to the situation. Try to see it differently. Perspective is a good thing.
- Just breathe. Take several deep breaths. Notice the air going in and out of your diaphragm. While you do this, try repeating a calming phrase or word.
- Pause and count to 10. Use the time to listen to the other person—and think carefully about how you want to respond in a calm manner.
- Walk it off. A short brisk walk may help you release your stress and think more clearly.
- Run a reality check. Ask yourself: Is it really worth getting angry? Am I responding appropriately?
If you feel like your emotions or stress are getting out of your control, talk to your primary care provider.
