Taking Medications as Prescribed
Posted on June 24, 2020
Did you know it’s estimated that three out of four Americans don’t take their medication as prescribed? Some reasons for this include confusion about instructions, cost of medication, and forgetfulness.
Medication adherence, or making sure we take our medications as prescribed, is important for controlling chronic conditions, treating temporary conditions, and maintaining overall health. Not following your doctor’s or pharmacist’s directions for taking medications can sometimes lead to serious issues or even death.
If, for any reason, you aren’t taking your prescribed medications correctly or at all, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. They can help clarify any confusing instructions or find out if a lower-cost alternative is available.
If you find it’s hard to remember to take your medications on time or in the right way, here are some tips to help you:
- Set up a schedule for taking medicine.
- Use a pillbox to sort pills.
- Set alarms on your smartphone or watch to alert you at the right time.
- Keep a chart of your medications handy, with drug name, purpose, prescriber, how/when to take, and color/shape.
For your safety: Always consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you miss a dose, are having side effects, or are thinking about stopping your medication.
Be sure to call your doctor ahead of time for refills so you don’t miss a dose.
