Refrigerator Clean Out

Posted on October 27, 2014
When I was in middle school, I had to do a science project. My mother suggested cleaning out our refrigerator and growing some of the open older food on petri dishes. (My mom saved everything and the frig was always packed!!!) I grew a number of fuzzy types of different colored bacteria and got an A!! After that, I started cleaning out our refrigerator regularly!!
Following are five easy steps to clean out your refrigerator
1. Take all your food out of the fridge. Place it on a table or counter so the refrigerator is completely emptied out. You’ll want to have empty space so that you can survey the damage –
If you have children you are likely to find some very interesting science experiments!
2. Go through all of the things you have taken out of your refrigerator and be sure to throw out any aged, moldy or inedible food. Bag them securely to prevent leakage and mold distribution – it may even help to contain the smell in the garbage. Check the expiration dates and throw out anything that is expired or that you know have been sitting in there for some unknown amount of time.
3. Take out all removable surfaces; shelving, drawers, etc. from the refrigerator. Believe it or not this actually makes the job easier and quicker to complete! Place the removable surfaces in the kitchen sink so you can clean it with hot water and sudsy dish detergent. If it is dishwasher safe you may want to consider running it through the dishwasher – be sure to check your owner’s manual before you put any parts in the dishwasher to be on the safe side.
Here are a few tips for washing removable surfaces of your refrigerator:
• Let glass shelving and/or drawers warm up to room temperature before you wash it in hot water. This will prevent it from shattering due to sudden temperature change.
• If you are having difficulty getting rid of heavy-duty spills and stains, try using hot water and ammonia. Dilute a little bit of ammonia in hot water (1:5 ratio should be plenty) and let the item(s) soak before scrubbing.
• Always be sure to dry all parts that you have removed from the refrigerator completely before putting them back
4. Now you are ready to clean the inside of the refrigerator. You can either use your preferred cleaning solution like the ammonia and water or you can try one of the following natural cleaning solutions:
• 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 quart hot water
• 1 part apple cider vinegar to 3 parts hot water
Try to avoid using soap or chemical cleaners, foods inside the refrigerator may absorb the smell. Use a clean sponge or cloth. Be sure to clean all the surfaces of the refrigerator including the fridge doors. Wipe off any excess water from the shelving on the refrigerator doors with a clean cloth.
5. Now you can put the food back into the refrigerator. Remember to wipe off any jars, bottles, or tupperware and place them back in the refrigerator.
