Practicing Six Easy Health Habits Can Help Prevent Flu Transmittal

Posted on September 26, 2014
In addition to getting the flu vaccine, good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu.
Practice these good health habits to reduce your chances of getting the flu!
1. Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. Remember, you may have the flu without even knowing it. You are contagious before the onset of symptoms. Protect yourself and others by keeping a safe distance.
2. If you are sick, STAY HOME!
Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will not only help prevent others from catching your illness, but you will also recover a bit faster by getting the proper rest.
3. Cover your mouth and nose.
Be sure to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the bend of your arm. It just may prevent those around you from getting sick.
4. Clean your hands.
Remember to wash your hands often. Frequent hand washing will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand or anti-bacterial hand gel.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
If you touch something that is contaminated with germs and then touch your eyes, nose or mouth, you can become sick by coming into contact with the germ.
6. Practice other good health habits.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Be sure to get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious foods. These health practices will help to boost your immune system!
