More than just a package
Posted on December 9, 2019
For five years, I’ve been a volunteer on the Monson, Massachusetts Military Care Packages Committee. Every September, our committee does a drive to collect toiletries, snacks, clothing, etc., for the military men and women of Monson who are actively serving.
The weekend before Thanksgiving our committee holds an annual care package assembly night. We invite our families and friends to join us and help assemble the care packages. The following day, our local Girl Scout troop meets us at the post office to help make sure all the boxes are ready for shipping.
Our town’s local businesses also contribute to our cause in various ways. The Monson Savings Bank offers to pay for all of the postage for our care packages. Adams, our local grocery store, does a “round-up” your bill event. Any amount over your bill, the proceeds are taken to go toward the fundraiser. We raised almost $2,500 this year. Lastly, the Main Street Tavern restaurant hosted a two fundraisers this year, in which they donated their proceeds from that night’s sales.
With the help of our town, we raised over $7,000! Each service member, (29 men and women in all branches of military including the Coast Guard) received a generous Visa gift card and two boxes full of love. Our donations not only support those who are serving, but also their family members when they have to be away from home during the holidays.
As a resident of Monson myself, I thought this would be a great way to give back to my community and show gratitude to those who protect and serve our county. It is a pretty amazing event to be part of and it really demonstrates love we have for each other within our community.
