Caring Health Center Patient and Wellness Center Instructor, BeHealthy Partnership PFAC Member
“‘Peace’ is always my greeting to anyone I meet. I strive to make a difference in life, in community, in health and family. I’ve been a patient at Caring Health Center (CHC) for over 20 years. I was diagnosed with cancer, and with the support of my doctors at CHC and my family, especially my sister Patricia Baker (R.I.P.), I was able to get through my treatment and three surgeries. Today, I am a cancer survivor.
“My goal was to never give up on life. After my first surgery, my main focus was to get my strength and health back. In 2009, I was introduced to the Wellness Center with Cristina Huebner Torres at CHC. Then, I became a volunteer instructor. I am now a certified group exercise instructor and CHC staff member. I serve as a role model to many great people working hard to improve their health by coming to Wellness Center classes, which are free.
“I also served as a board member at CHC. I lead cancer prevention, education and support groups at CHC. As a lifelong community advocate and organizer, my work began in the mid-1990s with my work with ARISE for Social Justice in collaboration with the homeless coalition. Through my involvement in the Wellness Center, I learned about a program starting at the YMCA called Men of Color Health Awareness (MOCHA). MOCHA engages men of color to focus on health, fitness, cancer and preventive care. We talk in groups about health disparities that affect men of color.
“We talk about why we should go to the doctor and take charge of our lives. I became a mentor, then an outreach coordinator, and am now a MOCHA Project Director.
“All of these experiences have opened the path for other men to make a difference. They fuel my passion to give back every day. Most importantly, ‘thank you’ to Cristina, Molly Totman, Jeniffer Betancourt, and my doctors, including Melissa Cavanaugh and Nataliya Lukin, at Caring Health Center and to Dexter Johnson, President and CEO of the YMCA, and his excellent staff for believing in me and for allowing me to be part of a great team of people caring for others in our community. I’ve been blessed with a beautiful daughter, Kenyada Denson, and son, Robert Lamont Scott, and my fiancé, Alicia Atkins, all of whom support my mission. Thank you, stay well, and bless. Peace.”
