Meet Health New England’s New President & CEO – Marion A. McGowan, PhD

This past July, we welcomed Marion A. McGowan, PhD, to Health New England as our new President and Chief Executive Officer. She is responsible for the growth and operational leadership of the organization, including the development and execution of strategic plans; successful introduction of new programs and services; membership growth; and operational, financial and service excellence. Marion is also responsible for continued improvements in clinical quality with a focus on lowering the cost of care in Western Massachusetts. Marion serves a dual role as Senior Vice President of Payer Innovation for our parent company, Baystate Health.
Marion came to Springfield from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Health Plan, where she served as Chief Clinical Administrative Officer & Senior Vice President of Population Health. At UPMC, she was responsible for the clinical business strategy and operations of the health plan, insuring over 3.5 million members.
Marion began her career as a staff nurse at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, rising in the ranks over the years to Director of Nursing. After 10 years, she joined the leadership team at Lancaster General Hospital where she furthered her leadership career.
Marion holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Carlow University in Pittsburgh, and a Master’s degree in Public Management and Healthcare Administration from Carnegie Mellon University. Additionally, she earned her Doctoral degree of Philosophy from the University of Alvernia in Leadership and Education.
Marion and her husband Mike have relocated to the area. They have two grown children, and two tiny dog companions, Heidi and Tink.
