June is Men’s Health Month

Posted on May 23, 2024
During June, take the time to prioritize your health by scheduling your annual preventive care visits with your primary care provider (PCP), if you haven’t done so yet. Some visits can be done via telehealth—over the phone or video.
At your visit, don’t forget to ask your PCP what screenings you are due for and what vaccinations you need (i.e., RSV, flu, pneumonia, shingles, COVID-19, etc.). And, be sure to bring your medications to your appointment so that your PCP can have a complete picture of your prescriptions.
Here’s a list of recommended screenings for men over 65:
- Blood Pressure Check: Ask your PCP to assess your blood pressure and your risks if your numbers are out of normal range. You could be at risk for heart disease.
- Colonoscopy: Discuss your options for a colon cancer screening with your PCP to assess your colon cancer risk.
- Depression Screening: Be screened for symptoms and to make sure that you are not at risk for developing major depression.
- Diabetes Screening: Get a diabetes screening if you have a family history, are overweight, or have other risk factors for diabetes.
- Lung CT Scan: Men who currently smoke or have smoked in the recent past should ask their PCP if they qualify for lung cancer screening.
- Prostate Cancer Screening: Have a risk-benefit discussion with your PCP for undergoing prostate cancer screening.
- Vision and Hearing Tests: Get your vision and hearing tested yearly.
- Weight Checks: If you are at an unhealthy weight, learn to eat better and manage chronic conditions by getting medical nutritional therapy.
