Are You at Risk of Falling? Learn How to Prevent Falls!
According to the American College of Physicians, 1 in 3 adults aged 65 years or older and 1 in 2 adults aged 80 years or older fall each year. Some falls result in serious injuries that require hospitalization. Multiple factors can lead to a fall, including age-related changes, chronic medical conditions, medications and environmental issues. Good news—falls can be prevented.
Here are some falls prevention tips:
-
Be sure to exercise—Balance problems or leg weakness can cause falls. Do exercises to improve balance and strength so you can be more stable on your feet.
-
Ask about your meds—Some medications can cause dizziness or vision problems. Your doctor can evaluate your risks for falling and check or adjust your medications.
-
Check your vision—Vision issues or improper glasses can cause falls. Visiting an eye doctor at least once a year to check your eyes and glasses may help you avoid some risks.
-
Make your home safe—Tripping hazards can cause falls. Ensure your home has good lighting. Install handrails on stairs and grab bars in the tub/shower. Use a non-slip tub mat. Remove throw rugs.
Talk with your doctor about your fall risks and prevention. If you have fallen in the past, let your doctor know. There are things you and your doctor can adjust to prevent another fall.
