Eat Healthy and Locally – Visit a Farmers Market near you!
Posted on June 22, 2011
We all know that we should eat more fruits and vegetables, the fresher (and more local) the better. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a place nearby that only sold fresh, local food?
Well, if you like that idea, consider a visit to a farmers market near where you live or work. Unprocessed fruits and vegetables are healthful and delicious.
Farmers markets are great sources of fresh produce and they are a fun way to shop. Many farmers markets also sell items like homemade preserves and baked goods. There are also likely to be tables selling local arts and crafts.
HNE is fortunate to be part of a community that is well stocked with farmers markets. Every one of them offers a selection of healthy choices. You’ll find farmers markets over a wide area of Western Massachusetts. They usually are open a variety of times during the week. You can get a list of farmers markets in our area at the website for Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA) – the “Be a Local Hero” people: http://www.farmfresh.org/food/farmersmarkets.php?zip=01002&open=1. The CISA website also describes other ways you can get locally grown and produced food, local food events, and agriculture in general.
