What Effect Does Diabetes Have on Eye Health?
Eye health can be affected when you have diabetes. Diabetes raises the risk for several eye diseases that can steal your sight. These include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, glaucoma, and cataracts. An eye doctor can spot these diseases early, when they are often easier to treat.
Managing your diabetes risks and seeing your eye doctor at least once a year for a comprehensive dilated eye exam is essential to protecting your eyesight. Learn more about diabetes from your doctor or visit the American Diabetes Association website at diabetes.org/about-diabetes.
Reminder: As a Health New England Medicare Advantage member, you have EyeMed®. You pay nothing for one routine eye exam with refraction per calendar year, and you get a $200 allowance at point of service every two calendar years from an in-network EyeMed provider. Learn more at healthnewengland.org/medicare/EyeMed-2023.
