Breast Cancer Screenings
Posted on September 16, 2020
Breast cancer is the second most commonly occurring form of cancer in women after skin cancer. Mammograms can help find breast cancer early. A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray exam of the breasts to look for changes that are not normal. A mammogram allows the physician to have a closer look for changes in breast tissue that cannot be felt during a breast exam. Learn more about breast cancer at www.cdc.gov/cancer/breast.
Your Health New England Medicare Advantage plan covers breast cancer screenings (mammograms) per the following:
• One screening mammogram every 12 months for women age 40 and older
• Clinical breast exams once every 24 months
• Additional screenings when medically necessary
There is no coinsurance, copayment, or deductible for covered screening mammograms. Preventive screenings are covered up to the limit covered by Original Medicare. Additional tests are covered if they are needed to diagnose and treat a condition.
If you have questions about your breast cancer risk, talk with your primary care provider or specialist about your screening options. When cancer is detected early, it may be more easily treated.
