A culture of giving: Being the change
Posted on December 19, 2016
Our family and I have been volunteering for the Springfield Rescue Mission for years. We deliver food to shut-ins and those in need on the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter holidays. This practice has been extremely humbling for my children. They now look forward to spending the time before a holiday serving those in our community. Through Operation SonShine, the Rescue Mission has created a mobile feeding program distributing food throughout the city of Springfield. There is no greater a feeling then to see firsthand the help you are giving!
We also collect all travel-sized toiletries when on vacation and bring them to the shelter where they are used in care packages. #SpringfieldRescueMission
I also volunteer on a regular basis serving meals at Friends of the Homeless. I recently started up a winter coat and boot drive for Friends of the Homeless. #FriendsoftheHomeless
Anyone who knows me will tell you I adore my two pit bulls, Trina and Shady. They are part of a misunderstood breed all too often mistreated and abused. I recently found a non-profit organization out of Long Island called the New York Bully Crew who are working hard to rescue dogs nationwide. They have outstretched their arms to include Puerto Rico and are striving to educate the public. They have adoption programs, fostering options, volunteer opportunities, as well as clothing for sale designed to show your support and spread awareness #NewYorkBullyCrew
Gardening the Community is a nonprofit engaged in youth development, urban agriculture, and sustainable living in Springfield. They teach kids about gardening and sustainable living by growing fruits and vegetables on vacant lots throughout the city. The food is then sold at the Mason Square market, local restaurants and small corner stores in the area. They also foster youth leadership and development by having young people serve on the board and take part in the decision-making processes. #GardeningtheCommunity
There are so many ways to give back to the community in which you live! I’ve listed my top four here but there are countless ways to get involved. If you care, why not try to increase awareness and get some extra help for the organizations you care about?
