A culture of giving back: Donating with love
Posted on December 19, 2016
Every year, the kids and I try to find different ways that we can support groups within our town and the surrounding ones. This year we gathered over 11 kid’s winter coats, in our home alone, for different ages and sizes. We also invited our friends/neighbors to be a part of this and clean out their closets as well. These coats were donated to a Springfield school through one of the dedicated teachers. She noted that many of the students arrive at school without a coat on freezing cold days. By donating coats, we were about to make sure they would be warm on that day, but could take it home to keep it for other days.
My son recently donated most of the books in his room that he grew out of, many of which looked brand new, to the same teacher above for the school’s reading needs. We received a message from the reading teacher in the school thanking my son for his gifts. He was so proud of himself and had such a big smile on his face. It was great to see!
For Thanksgiving this year, we also donated three turkeys to a local church group who were preparing them for area families in need.
“Blessing Bags” are a big thing for me this time of year. I saw this idea on Facebook a couple years ago and made some. They are cold weather items, healthy snacks and health essentials all grouped in plastic bag. When the kids and I notice someone on the streets, at the intersections, we will often hand one of them out the window. Some people have politely turned us down, while others were extremely grateful.
Any way that we can find to help give back and share some of the blessings we have been given in life is what it’s all about. It feels good to be able to make people smile with just a small gesture of caring anytime during the year.
