I don’t care whether you were a preteen/teen in the 70’s (as I was) or today – the issues are the same. Lies, gossip, rumors, betrayal, misunderstandings, broken hearts, first kiss, first love, first everything – it’s not different. I think kids think it’s different because they listen to different music, wear different clothes, have access to technology, etc. But I can tell you, it doesn’t matter that I was wearing Levi corduroy’s, Mia clogs and listening to Parliament – I still went to school dances where you walked in with one boy being your boyfriend and by the time the dance was over, you had broken up, been told someone else likes you, danced with him, gave a kiss in a quiet doorway and left with a brand new boyfriend. Peer pressure, confusion, mistakes, regrets, homework, parental disappointment – we’ve all been there and done that and have words of wisdom to offer our children, perhaps grandchildren, but it’s so incredibly frustrating when they shut you down.

We’ve all heard that saying about history repeating itself, right? This is the real version:

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. ~ George Santayana, The Life of Reason, Vol. 1: Reason in Common Sense (1905).

But, wait – whose past is it that we are supposed to remember? What if we don’t have the past to call upon? Our children don’t. So, does it help to learn from someone else’s past? Do we need to experience it all for ourselves to actually learn the lesson? Perhaps you cannot deeply understand a lesson or a consequence unless it’s something that has actually happened to you.

Sadly, it seems as though my questions are not new. We’ve long realized that people don’t gain that much by hearing about an experience another person has had – it usually doesn’t affect their own choices.

What experience and history teach is this — that nations and governments have never learned anything from history, or acted upon any lessons they might have drawn from it. ~ Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Lectures on the Philosophy of History (1832), Introduction

Yet it remains so painful to watch our children go through things that they could have avoided if THEY HAD ONLY LISTENED TO US! (How many times have you uttered those exact words to your child? Aren’t we all so predictable?!)

Perhaps we approach it the wrong way. Maybe it’s not teaching what WE experienced and what WE learned but rather guiding our children in identifying their own lesson.

As one of my favorite authors writes: The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind. ~ Kahlil Gibran

Another view: The best leaders value their words, and use them sparingly. When they have accomplished their task, the people say, “Amazing! We did it all by ourselves!” Lao Tzu Tao Te Ching

So, the next time you find yourself telling a story to your children in an attempt to teach them what to do or not to do, think instead about asking them what they think they should do.
