It accounts for 43 percent of all recorded identify thefts. It occurs more often than banking or finance thefts. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the medical records of between 27.8 million and 67.7 million people have been breached since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Medical identify theft goes beyond financial repercussions. Inaccurate or false medical information is added to the personal medical record of a victim. Once this information is added to a medical record, patients have to go through a process to correct it. However, it is nearly impossible to segregate the correct information from the fraudulent information. This misinformation puts patients at increased risk of improper treatment.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of medical-related security breaches are linked to the theft of a computer or another electronic device. Twenty percent of thefts are from someone gaining unauthorized access to information or passing it on without permission. Fourteen percent are the result of hacking. Failure to secure personal medical information can lead to civil fines of between $100 and $50,000 for failure to meet privacy standards, and fines of up to of $1.5 million per year for a business, institution, or provider.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to prevent identity theft is to protect the information. Here are some suggestions for protecting patient information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Encrypt all mobile devices<\/li>\n<li>Encrypt all information that is transmitted information<\/li>\n<li>Screen employees and allow access to data only as needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At Health New England (HNE) we maintain a comprehensive security program to protect our member data. This program includes safeguards relating to the storage, access, and transportation of information. We encrypt any data that is stored or transported on electronic devices such as laptops or tapes. Employers need to build awareness of medical identity theft with employees and customers.
